I chuckle when I look back to when I began performing weddings. When I first started, I fantasized about couples calling me up in the middle of the night telling me to “Come right away!” to marry them. And like the firefighter who has to be prepared to jump into action at a moment’s notice, I would be out the door in no time just to give a couple their happiest moment! (lol)
Words and phrases like urgency…impulsive…spur of the moment were what I thought an elopement was all about. But, over the years, I’ve discovered that that those types of elopements are probably only happening at the little chapels and the drive thru’s in Las Vegas. I think I’ve only had one couple call me the day they were planning to elope. They called me in the afternoon; told me they weren’t any rush and suggested I come over that evening…simple, calm and beautiful.
Nowadays I use the phrase “elopement style weddings.” They’re well thought out and planned months in advance. They usually pick beautiful and fun destination places in the area to get married. The brides are in beautiful wedding dresses/gowns. They have their hair and nails done and most have a bouquet. What makes it an "elopement style wedding" is simply the number of guests (less than 5), if there are any guests at all.
BTW... I will still happily jump into action if someone calls me in the middle of the night to elope.
